Asian Games, China Wins the First 35km Mixed Race Walking Race
It is expected that racewalking and ‘mixed relay’ will be adopted as an official event at the Paris Olympics.
In the 35km mixed race walking race, which debuted at the Asian Games, the host country, China, came out on top.
China won the 35km mixed race walk at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games held on the 4th at the walking course near Qiantang River Smart New World in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China, with a total time of 5 hours 16 minutes 41 seconds, beating Japan with 5 hours 22 minutes 11 seconds.
For the 35km mixed race walk, the rankings are determined by adding up the 35km personal records of male and female athletes from each country. 안전놀이터
For countries with more than two athletes, the records of the better male athlete and one female athlete are added together.
However, medals are awarded to all participating athletes.
‘Walking powerhouses’ China and Japan sent four athletes, two men and two men, to the competition, while Hong Kong, India, and Indonesia each participated with one man and woman.
Korea did not participate in the mixed race walk.
China took first place with a time of 5 hours 16 minutes and 41 seconds, including the men’s Wang Qin’s 2 hours, 31 minutes and 28 seconds and the women’s Cheyang Shije’s 2 hours, 45 minutes and 13 seconds.
Japan’s final record was 5 hours 22 minutes 11 seconds, combining the results of the men’s Subaro Ishida (2 hours, 31 minutes and 12 seconds) and the women’s Masumi Fuchise (2 hours, 50 minutes and 59 seconds).
India won the bronze medal with a time of 5 hours 51 minutes 14 seconds (men Ram Babu 2 hours 42 minutes 11 seconds, women Rani Manju 3 hours 09 minutes 03 seconds).
Until the 2018 Jakarta/Palembang Games, the men’s 50km race walk was an official event in track and field at the Asian Games.
This sport maintained its status as an official event in the Olympics until the Tokyo Games held in 2021.
However, work was done to modify the 50km racewalking as it was pointed out that ’50km racewalking is too boring and there are only a few athletes who complete it.’
The World Association of Athletics Federations has eliminated the 50km race walk from the 2022 Eugene World Championships and adopted the 35km walk for men and women as an official event.
The Asian Athletics Federation established a new 35km mixed race walk and introduced it at the Hangzhou Asian Games.
However, it is highly likely that this will be the first and last time that a 35km mixed race walking event is held at the Asian Games.
The World Association of Athletics Federations and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have adopted the ‘mixed racewalking relay’, in which one man and one woman each team walk 42.195 km, as a new official event at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The mixed race relay is held in the form of ‘the male athlete walks 10 km and then alternates with the female athlete, and the male athlete who rested while the female athlete walked 10 km walks again 10 km and leaves the last 10 km to the female athlete.’
The Asian Games are also expected to adopt the mixed racewalking relay as a new official event starting with the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Games.
